37.Critical Evaluation

Critical Evaluation I am very happy with my final piece for my Documentary Photography Project. I was not sure if a book would be suitable for my final piece project, as I wanted to go down the root of the New Topographics but after some basic research and some thought, I decided that the short time scale we had, would not be suitable to create a final piece. Creating a book, however, was a much better choice. It allowed me to create simple New Topographics layout and style of work, but at the same time, allowed me to create an educational visual book which would also focus on single images. I am happy that I chose to do my project on Castles of South Wales. there were some aspects of my project which I felt could have been better if I hadn't chosen to do Castles. Things like the cost of travel, which I hadn't really though about in the long term. I had to pay to get to the castles, either by train or by petrol, then I had to pay to get into the castles, it added up

36. Making a Book

Image
I decided, for my final piece, that I wanted to create a Visual Book to display my work. What I want to do is include seven castles which I have looked at in the book, then as chapters, I will look at each individual aspect of that castle which I have photographed, then to round off the chapter I will include all of the castles which I have looked at and one specific features. So it would be, one chapter on Caerphilly, then at the end of that chapter I will focus on Windows, for example, then I will include all the images of each castles windows there, as shown here: As shown above, in my draft book, I would like to include text on the page opposite the specific aspect of the castle. I have read through several book and done some research online to comprise my text used in my book. Here are the books and websites which I have used to gather my information about my book. http://www.castles.me.uk/ http://medieval-castles.org/index.php?cat=70 http://www.chiddingstone.kent

35. A Visit to Chepstow & Caerphilly

Image
I've been to a number of castles so far, and now I know how I'm use my photographs I know I am coming to the end of my project. My final visits are going to include Chepstow Castle and Caerphilly, and being back up in Cardiff, after the Easter Holidays , meant that my trips would be fairly local. Cardiff Central Station is the main Station in South Wales, so I will be using train travel, with my Railcard!  Chepstow Castle I had no idea that Chepstow had a Castle. I know it's known for it's horse racing, but not so much it's Castle, and what a Castle it was. The train journey was around 30minutes, which wasn't so bad. The trains were fairly often as well, at least every 20 minutes or so. It was a short walk from the Train Station in Chepstow to the Castle, you only needed to follow a main road through the town center.  The Castle runs alongs the river Severn, high up on a sort of Cliff top, which would have given it it's great vantage point at a tio

I decided to visit Llansteffan and Dinefwr a Second time, as this time round I will klnow exactly what I need to photograph.  FOCUS ON : TOWER, MAIN DOOR, WHOLE CASTLE, WINDOWS, STONE WORK, ARCH ABOVE DOOR.   DINEFWR LLANSTEFFAN

33. Oxwich & Oystermouth

Oxwich Castle Oystermouth Castle My problem when visiting Oystermouth Castle, was the weather. It was very bright, and I feel like this could effect my final images.

32. Some Notes

Image
Over the Easter Holidays, I was on holiday, so I made sure I made some notes, which I could include on this blog. They're fairly basic notes, but it's very important, to me, to include every last little bit I have done. I would also like to point out that a number of the Castles I wanted to visit were not opening until the end of March, which was very problematic.  I've considered many things in these notes, including some work towards how I might show my final images.

31. Gower Castles

Image
After visiting some Castle in South West Wales, around Carmathenshire, I decided to visit the Castles of the Gower, Swansea. I am very aware of the Castles that scatter the coast of the Gower, as I've essentially grown up on the Gower. I know of around three or four, but on my first visit, and after noticing that some of the Castles were closed, I only visited Weobley Castle and Pennard Castle. Pennard Castle I had been warned by my mother that there wasn't much to see at Pennard Castle, but none the less I wanted to visit it to document as many castles as I could.  Pennard Castle overlooks Three Cliffs Bay, which is a stunning place so I didn't mind the trip. There was more there than I'd first imagined, but again not much which I could use for my final piece, I have a number of Castles which are fairly grand, with large towers and similar features, so I know that I want to keep to photographing Castles which do have quite substantial remains. Even tho
